Why Every Great Interior Design Process Starts with Understanding How You Live
One of the most interesting parts of my job isn’t selecting furniture, choosing colour palettes or designing beautiful homes.
It’s helping two people who love each other agree on what home should look and feel like.
I’ve worked with couples where one person was drawn to clean, minimalist interiors, while the other preferred warmth, colour and layers of texture. At first glance, it can seem like a disagreement about style. One person likes contemporary design, the other prefers something more characterful. It appears that the challenge is finding a compromise between two different aesthetics.
In reality, that’s rarely what’s happening.
More often than not, those conversations reveal something much more important. They reveal two different ways of living.
Style Is Rarely the Real Conversation
Over the years, I’ve found that the most successful projects begin by looking beyond design preferences and understanding the people behind them.
One homeowner may be looking for a calm, uncluttered environment because they spend their working day making decisions and want their home to feel like a place to switch off. The other may picture a home that’s full of life, where family and friends gather regularly, and where comfort is just as important as appearance.
Neither perspective is right or wrong.
They’re simply describing what home means to them.
Once you understand that, the conversation changes completely. Instead of asking whose style should take priority, the focus shifts to creating a home that supports both lifestyles. Those insights shape every decision that follows, from the layout and furniture selection to the colours, materials and finishes that bring the space together.
Great Design Starts With Better Questions
This is why the interior design process should never begin with mood boards or colour palettes.
Before exploring design concepts, we want to understand how our clients live.
How do they spend their evenings?
Do they enjoy entertaining?
Where do they naturally gravitate when they come home?
What works well in their current home, and what doesn’t?
The answers to these questions often shape the direction of the entire project, ensuring every design decision is rooted in the way the home will actually be lived in rather than simply how it will look.
Designing for Two People, Not Two Styles
One of the biggest misconceptions about interior design is that it’s about choosing between different styles.
In reality, it’s about creating spaces that reflect the people who live in them.
That doesn’t mean one person compromises while the other gets their way. It means finding thoughtful design solutions that allow both people to feel equally at home.
A minimalist aesthetic can still feel warm and inviting through carefully chosen materials, layered lighting, and texture. Likewise, a richly layered interior can remain calm and cohesive through thoughtful planning and considered use of colour.
When the design is driven by lifestyle rather than labels, it becomes much easier to create a home that feels authentic to everyone who lives there.
The Best Homes Reflect the People Who Live in Them
At NateBel Interiors, we believe exceptional homes begin with understanding people before designing spaces.
Every successful design process starts by uncovering what matters most to our clients. Only then do we begin developing layouts, selecting materials, and refining the details that bring the vision to life.
That approach allows us to create homes that don’t simply look beautiful in photographs but support everyday life in a meaningful way.
Beautiful Homes Begin With Understanding
The best interior design isn’t about convincing someone to choose a particular style.
It’s about understanding what home means to the people who will live there and translating that into a space that feels both beautiful and deeply personal.
When you begin with curiosity rather than assumptions, every design decision becomes more intentional. The result is a home that not only reflects your style but also supports the way you live every single day.
If you’re curious to see how this approach comes to life in real homes, we invite you to explore our Portfolio. And if you’re ready to start planning a home that’s designed around your lifestyle, we’d love to start the conversation.
